Yowza....I'm back in malaysia....
The time now is 12.36 am on January 31 2006 and my whole family is watching a beauty contest on NTV7 in which the msian contestant made a spectacular fool of herself by displaying her enormously lacking (or rather non-existent) mental capabilities...It's some sorta Miss Chinese Cosmos Contest....that's right...chinese martians...although they are quite cebu(a slang from the southern region ie johor n singapore which means lenglui)
I just came back from Ipoh tday...Chinese New Year ma...thankfully only there for 2 days...because it's quite boring actually...although gambling with my cousins held some interesting possibilities as some of em have since grown up a little more thus creating a new generation of qin wong ji wong(king gambler(s))...i tried to teach em to play bridge...which i picked up in singapore...but the idea didn't really caught on so we stayed with good ol' cho dai di and mahjong and blackjack...mind u...some of those little blighters are bloody lucky(they pawnd me lotsa times...makin me a whole lot poorer)
Met up with Sue Bee in Ipoh...she's gonna be there till the comin thursday by which time i'll probably be in Johor...we talked for bout 1.5 hours in a local kfc...mostly her though...it wasn't till after she left that i realised we didn't buy anything from kfc...alamak!! so sorry sue bee...make u talk so long n never buy u a drink somemore...hope u didn't get a sore throat...somemore i later quite pai seh when i look at the kfc staff...they must be thinking...bloody cheapskate...sit there for free air con(it was a VERY VERY HOT day)
I wanted to call jordan along as well ( because i was under the impression he was in Ipoh)...unfortunately..he was sleeping throughout the whole journey north and therefore ignored my calls till he reached taiping...he's only supposed to go down to ipoh on tuesday(today actually)
I went down to Taylors the other day...actually...i meant it only as a short lunch with caleb and yentink...as those were the only two i met o9... in any case...i still haden't done my cny shopping at that time(which my mum contantly reminded me about)so i din't meant to stay long...
I got myself into my taylors Tee( because i actually signed up for a-levels there ade and paid up teem so now i have a black T-shirt worth 500 bucks) and went to taylors and WHAT THE HECK!! SO MANY CHS-ers... good lord...wliau...sia la... in the end had lunch with about 10 ppl...then everyone had to leave...cos like i said...it wasn't planned...left me and yentink...and we met shaun and rachel....and yentink's driver( a fellow taylorian) dislocated his leg(search me) and got sent to hospital and she got stranded and to cut a long story short...she tumpang taxi with shaun and rachel to 1u to get back home....in the end...i went round the taylors' campus and met A LOT more ppl from chs until my parents called and i went shopping...
Thankfully...most of my friends still haven't changed....much....yet....understandably...it's only been a month...but i'm still thankful...
Lots of ppl have asked me the same questions these past few days...I've mainly answered in vague generic terms such as "ok" and "fun" and"tiring" because I'm a vague generic person... Anyhow...I feel pretty bad because i felt i did not do their questions and my experiences in singapore justice so I have decided to compile a list of FAQs...and this time around...i shall endeavour to answer in a vaguely generically specific way(whatever that is)
1. How's life in Singapore?
Ok...i'll admit it... i actually enjoy life there..no kidding...it's very easy to get around (1. because it's small and 2. the public transport is excellent) and there's something different about stayin in a boarding school. Being with your peers at all times allows you to do crazy stuff like staying up till 4am spray-painting your roomdoor gold for chinese new year decorations[there was a competition see and my indian roomates were all excited about it so we did a multicultural decoration thingy where they wrote new year greetings in tamil and malayalam and me and the other msian did it in eng, malay and chinese...i missed the prize giving ceremony cum CNY dinner but turns out we got 4th ;-) ] and going down to the beach and dunking people in it just for the heck of it and dryin off under the sun as and when we want too...being away from home actually liberalizes you alot...You can ask Jordan or the other ASEAN scholars and i bet they will agree...think about it as a Harry Potter lifestyle...minus the magic
2. How's school there?
School here is actually pretty cool...so far i have very interesting lecturors and tutors(except for the econs guy...more on him later) and the best part is...there's a whole lot more than lectures and tutorials...like i said...the ccas here i really very active... i'm finally able to take part in everthing that i've always wanted to join because this place literally has everything(that i've ever wanted to join)... 73 ccas to choose from...and each one is serious...none of em dead or slacking...and all of em run by students for students!! My days are literally packed not with schoolwork but rather with lots of zany crap and outings along with my feeble attempts to get in shape for the NAPFA shit...it's tiring..but very very fun...because u get to share it with alot of friends...Right now, we're also conducting a game called angel-mortal where you as an angel are supposed to write msgs to ur mortal and vice versa...the angels know who their mortals are...but not the other way round....we play it with our seniors, so we get to ask them stuff about the college as well...Angels are supposed to give gifts to their mortals as well..the more common gifts are chocs and sweets...although some rich ppl can get more expensive stuff...so far i've given my mortal a cover of time magazine with a picture of mao zedong, a rock, a fork and a squashed ping-pong ball...unfortunately...all identities will be revealed on valentines' day...hope she doesn't kill me...i got her name wrong as well in the 1st letter...it's xun ai, i wrote xuhai..as for my econs tutor...he's a nice guy...except that he seriosuly lacks confidence which prompts my friend to say that if you push him on the floor...he'll sit there and cry.. Sure..you study alot as well but as they say at victoria...play hard...work hard
3. How are the singaporeans...aren't they kiasu?
IF there's one thing about singaporeans havin misconceptions about us...there's also alot of malaysians running around with false impressions of singaporeans...for convenience..i've compiled a list of things to note below:
A)Singaporeans are more kiasu-They are not more kiasu than us....they are exactly like us...true...they care about their studies and every mark is very important to them...but then again...we also care about our studies and i still remember the scenario after our school examinations where there will be long lines to see Mr. Hardev for that one mark too....relax guys...i think it's normal after all...
B)Life there is very pressurising and therefore tough- I assume this stems from the fact that singaporeans are more kiasu than us ( which they are not) Look...ppl used to say that life in 5s1 was pressurising and tough and all because we are all kiasu...life in 5s1 was one of the best parts of my life ever...if that's pressurising...i'll take it any time of the week including sundays...
C) Singaporeans are smarter than us/know more than us - Firstly, knowing more than us(which they don't) does not make them smarter than us. Secondly, they are not smarter than us...I'll put it this way...the singaporeans and us are alike in every way with the only conceivable difference i have managed to find is that we all speak and write better chinese and malay than any of them.Period.
All in all, you cannot tell a singaporean and malaysian apart...they can't...i can't...i doubt u can either...
P.S. Remind me to buy Sue Bee a drink the next time i meet her...i owe her one
